Creation Block
Grade 3: Creation Stories and Painting
I really struggled with the Creation stories block for Grade 3 and umm and ahhed for a long time, and I even emailed Melissa of Waldorf Essentials for advice. I
wanted to do them as there is a reason that they are delivered at this pivotal
age, however I really struggled with
this fact due to personal issues and when I was doing my planning for this
year I decided that we would not cover them, we would do creation stories from
the first nations. However after much thought and
deliberation I decided that we would cover them and bought the Jacob Streit
book ‘And There was light’. I will use this as the basis for the stories that I
will bring each day. I will also do chalkboard drawing that will evolve each
day as the days of creation are covered.
I am following the lesson outline in Waldorf essentials for
this block which means that I will cover 1
to 2 days each main lesson, I plan to play this by ear as Noah is a slow
writer, which means when he is writing his summaries it may take some time. We
school Tues to Friday so we started out on Tuesday with reading the first
chapter called ‘In the beginning’ I am not going to cover the Michael &
Dragon fight in chapter 2 as he knows this story very well. We then read Day 1 of creation and did the corresponding
paintings:
On Wednesday we recalled the stories from the previous day a
developed a short summary together for each, these were then written on some of
the water colour paper and each decorated with a fancy border.
Noah did not like doing two summaries at once so today we will cover one day of creation and the corresponding painting each day now.
Creation Day 2 :

Creation Day 4:
Creation Day 6:
At the end of the block we bound the paintings and written
summaries into a book that Noah can keep forever. We used a single sheet book binding method which was really laborious and fiddly, Noah sewed one sheet in and I did the rest.
He is so proud of his work as he should be, he has worked really hard. xx
