Grade 3: Fibres Lesson 1 & 2
This is a set of retrospective posts from last yr when we were using Waldorf as our spine and adding in Montessori and Charlotte Mason. The posts outline our Fibres block which combined elements from Waldorf essentials, Marsha Johnson's Yahoo group files and my own resources and ideas. I hope you enjoy it and that it helps you in your journey. The Fibres block took about 3 weeks in total, consisting of 4 lessons a week.
Fibres Lesson 1
The first fibre we looked at was leather, the rational behind this relates to the type of fibre first used by humans, I think the Marsha Johnson material talks about the chronological order of fibre use. Anyhoo, we decided to do leather first. During the introduction I talked about peoples need to cover themselves with clothes and we had a discussion as to why that might be. Lots of reasons were highlighted such as to keep warm, modesty, protection from the sun, wind etc... I then asked him what he thought the first people used as clothes? After identifying animal skin such as fur, I then showed him some of our shoes and asked him what he thought they were made of. Once we had identified the material as leather I read a story called 'Stone Age Boy', this is a living book and explains through story how animal skins were prepared for use. There is a link at the bottom to Amazon where you can buy the book.
After the story and our discussion I got my son to copy the right hand side of the black board into his MLB for the title page of our new block. The left hand side shows the weeks form (which I got from Drawing and painting in Waldorf schools) and the new handwriting letter from Soul Development through Handwriting. I am not sure about this resource for my son we will see how it goes...

Fibres Lesson 2
I asked my son for a recap of yesterdays lesson particularly about the animal skin preparation, I then talked about how the first humans probably observed the animals and how their fur and skin protected them from the elements. I also explained that the long ago people honoured every part of the animal by using all of it and we talked about how that happened for instance bones were made into tools and jewellery and the meat was eaten etc. After this I showed him a short video of how leather was made long ago and how it is made now. We then created a summary together which I wrote out on paper, adding drawings for him to copy. We also discussed grammar by adding in commas and identifying nouns.

This is the page my son completed in his main lesson book as his title page, for the start of our Fibres block.

After he had completed his MLB work, we then started on our handwork activity for leather, we will not do a handwork activity for all of the fibres as we don't have time, so I just selected some. I presented both my children with a leather craft kit each, there is absolutely no way that my youngest would tolerate being excluded from this task. I bought some little leather purses for them to sew from Amazon, good old Amazon eh? Anyhoo, I have included several images of the kit and the finished article below and have included a link to the purse kit:
